To state the obvious, the concept is that if someone is treating you unfairly, you don't have to react by lowering yourself to the same level of conduct.

Isn't that a hard thing to do? How many times have you been in a conflict, and noted "oh, that's the way you want to play."

Speaking as one who can pontificate better than execute, take the high road. Isn't that what Papa showed us?
