A thought about faith

"Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that you have." 1 Peter 3:15.

Faith is rational and reasonable, and not a leap into the dark. As a result, , we always should be ready to explain not just the substance of our faith, but also its basis.

Yes, yes, yes. I couldn't agree more. It's important for us to share WHAT we believe, but probably even more important for us to be able to tell others WHY we believe it. We live in a technological age in which people want answers for everything. To be true disciples in this age, we must be ready to give logical and rational support for our faith (of which there is plenty)! I've been convicted of this myself and have been ferouciously studying apologetics in recent days, which makes it interesting that you bring the topic up!!

On another note, when working on a long post, and you fill in all the necessary things to post... you hit submit and can never be sure if it was recieved... Hopefully there is another post above this one that adds my 2 cents... if not I'll try again later.

Hopefully this is not a repeat...

Not only should one be able to explain the basis of their own faith, but we are also exhorted to:
"Prove all things, hold fast that which is good." 1 Thessalonians 5:21

In that we should know the truth so well so that when a counterfeit, even one that sounds really good comes across our plate, we can spot it out. Because often what sounds good to the mind is often dead wrong. (eg: mormonism, humanism, and even the emerging church movement....)

"He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered." Proverbs 28:26

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?" Jeremiah

I am starting to see all too often the world dictate what the church should believe. And in response the church tries to manipulate the word in order to fit what they think it should mean. A great example is what is happening with the Episcopal church recently...
We all need to be reminded of what Paul urged Timothy...

"O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge - by professing it, some have strayed from the faith..."
1 Timothy 6:20-21

So yes be ready to explain the hope you have at any moment, but also be ready to stand apart when you see something stray off course. Check out 2 Timothy 2:15... for all those in Awana should know it pretty good.

Good points Nanc and b. I want to emphasize that there is a rational basis for our faith. We don't just walk to the edge of the light and leap blindly. We need to know that to explain it to others, but more importantly we need to know the rational basis for ourselves. It is the substance of our faith.
